This presentation engages with tensions over conceptualisations of young people and their citizenship in school geography. I begin with the premise that children’s lives are rich and varied, and that young people are political actors, who make a difference in our families, communities, places and institutions. I then consider how constructions of ‘the child’ in national curricula, and the politics of the ‘knowledge turn’, have shaped educational practices and schools as education spaces in England. Drawing on research in the sub discipline of children’s geographies and work on youth citizenship, I conclude by arguing the educational and social value of engaging with children’s geographies and citizenship in school geography. Following this, I invite discussion around how to further engage with children’s perspectives in geography education research, policy and practice.
